Traditional data centres vs containerised data centres
Demand for physical infrastructure is intensifying as a result of several converging trends: the growth of edge computing, increasing demands for data sovereignty, and power densification.
BUILDING a traditional data centre remains a LONG AND COMPLEX PROJECT. It involves, in succession, site selection, obtaining permits, the design phases, followed by construction and commissioning. The average timeframe generally ranges from 3 to 6 YEARS.
INFRASTRUCTURE accounts for up to 45% OF TCO, making it the second-largest expense after servers. In Europe, the cost of building a Tier III data centre REACHES APPROXIMATELY €15,000/kW (source: Savills Research), with an estimated annual increase in construction costs of 5.5% per year.
Against this backdrop of structurally rising investment, every decision regarding location becomes strategic and requires a more agile and rational approach to the data centre model.
